WHAT IS MEDICAL CODING

Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician’s notes, laboratory and radiology results, etc.

Medical coding professionals help ensure the codes are applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes abstracting the information from documentation, assigning the appropriate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is the gold standard for medical coding in a physician’s office setting. The CPC certification exam tests the competencies required to perform the job of a professional coder specializing in coding for services performed by physicians and non-physician providers (eg, nurse practitioners and physician assistants).

Individuals who earn the CPC credential have proven expertise in physician/non-physician provider documentation review, abstract professional provider encounters, coding proficiency with CPT®, HCPCS Level II, ICD-10-CM, and compliance and regulatory requirements for physician services.
